Buru keistimewaan tujuh golongan di sisi Allah

Ustaz Zainudin Hashim

Oct 02, 07 |

Tazkirah Ramadan

sesungguhnya seluruh hidup mereka adalag melampaui batas (agama)."

apatah lagi mengeluarkan air mata kerananya.

Allah." (Hadis riwayat at-Tirmizi)

Sesungguhnya baginda Rasulullah s.a.w banyak memberi motivasi kepada

tindakan orang-orang Islam sendiri.

1. Menangis kerana kasih sayang & kelembutan hati.
2. Menangis kerana rasa takut.
3. Menangis kerana cinta.
4. Menangis kerana gembira.
5. Menangis kerana menghadapi penderitaan.
6. Menangis kerana terlalu sedih.
7. Menangis kerana terasa hina dan lemah.
8. Menangis untuk mendapat belas kasihan orang.
9. Menangis kerana mengikut-ikut orang menangis.
10. Menangis orang munafik - pura-pura menangis.

waktu malam seperti peristiwa penurunan al-Quran malam al-Qadr, peristiwa

malam hari sehingga pecah-pecah kedua-dua telapak kakinya. Demikianlah
kepadanya.

Hadis daripada Ali Said r.a. menyatakan bahawa Rasulullah s.a.w ada

Riwayat Tarmizi.

ketenangan.

Rasulullah s.a.w. menggesa agar setiap orang melakukannya. Sesungguhnya
Rasulullah s.a.w. tidak pernah meninggalkannya. Ketika sakit atau terasa
malas, baginda sembahyang dalam keadaan duduk. - Riwayat Abu Daud. - mks.

Penternak babi bermain wayang, penduduk demonstrasi lagi!

Penternak babi bermain wayang, penduduk demonstrasi lagi!

Oct 02, 07

Masjid Tanah, 2 Okt (Hrkh) - Lebih 1,000 penduduk sekitar Kuala Sungai
Baru mengadakan demonstrasi membantah kelewatan operasi pemindahan babi

berkuasa.

Menurut Ketua Pergerakan Pemuda Umno Bahagian Masjid Tanah, Rozambri
babi, namun masih belum memuaskan hati penduduk kerana banyak lagi

Kampung Ujong Padang, Omar Md Nor, beliau mengharapkan kerajaan negeri

Beruang, keadaan bau busuk semakin teruk kerana penternak bermain wayang

memulakan sesi berbuka puasa dengannya.

Ketika seseorang berpuasa hendak berbuka, organ tubuhnya bersiap sedia,
organ pencernaan mulai aktif semula, khususnya perut kosong yang perlu
diberikan sesuatu yang lembut dan halus.

Orang berpuasa sehari suntuk, serba keletihan memerlukan makanan pemberi
keadaan perut sedang kosong.

Pray that Umno will not come to Sarawak

Pray that Umno will not come to Sarawak
Sim Kwang Yang
Sep 29, 07 12:06pm

Sarawak is the only state in Malaysia where Umno has not established
any presence. Within Sarawak itself, the talk is not so much if, but
when Umno will make a grand entry, as it did in Sabah.

Now, the conditions seem riper than ever before for Umno's foray into
that vast eastern state on the northern shores of the Borneo Island,
as Sarawak is on the verge of plunging into a leadership vacuum.

The Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud, has been in power
for slightly more than a quarter of a century in that resource rich
territory. (Pardon me for mentioning him by name. His string of
titles is too long to be cited in full for a column of limited length
like mine.)

But Taib is in his 70s, and rumours of his ailing health have been
rife like wildfire in Kuching. I have heard various versions of his
struggle with his cancer problem within some part of his internal
anatomy, but like a good Sarawakian, I will not spread the rumour
further.

He had three front-runners for successors within his party, the PBB
earlier on: Abang Johari, Adenan Satem and Effendi Norwawi. All three
seem to have fallen out of his favour since then. He has yet to name
an alternative candidate for party president and Sarawak CM. There is
also nobody in sight who is more powerful, more charismatic, or more
senior than the above mentioned three veteran politicians.

Here, the unique ethnic composition of Sarawak enters into the power
equation. Since 1970, when Abdul Rahman Yakub (left) returned from
his federal Cabinet position to Kuching, to assume the exalted office
of the CM, it has always been silently understood that the highest
political office in the state must be a Melanau, the ethnic community
to which both Rahman and his nephew-successor Taib belong.
The Melanau people make up about 5% only of the state's population.
Roughly half of them are Christians, and the other half are Muslims.
They are mostly confined to the lower reaches of the Rejang Basin and
along the neighbouring coast.

This racial sub-plot may be a moot point with political commentators
from KL, but in Sarawak, it has sent off a ripple of undercurrent
within the PBB. During past party elections, Malay leaders in PBB had
quietly jostled for votes and party positions on the platform of
restoring a Malay CM eventually in Sarawak. So far, they have not
really succeeded.

Mahathir-Taib agreement?

One such past party senior leader, Abang Abu Bakar, left the PBB and
tried to campaign for the entry of Umno into Sarawak, without avail.
I count Abang Abu as my good friend and a good man, and am sad that
he has since disappeared into the political wilderness.

All kinds of speculations run through the Sarawak grapevine of
course. One version has it that the former PM and former Umno
president Dr Mahathir Mohamad had reached an agreement with Taib in
the 90s that as long as Taib is the Sarawak CM, Umno will leave
Sarawak entirely in his charge.

(I have also heard that this agreement has expired recently, and we
do have a new PM and a new Umno president. One has to wonder about
the authenticity of any report of such secret deals. It is meant to
be secret, so how did it reach the grapevine? But then, the logic of
such a deal does make a great deal of sense. Taib does have a lot of
chips to play with, because he can deliver a big block of
parliamentary seats to the Umno PM to shore up his position in
national politics.)

Suppose we accept this scenario at its face value. Taib is bound to
orchestrate his gracious and secure exit from Sarawak politics sooner
rather than later. Powerful or meek, rich or poor, all men are
subject to the immutable natural law of ageing and dying. This is
really the time for him to settle the succession problem. That he has
not done so does not bode well for the future of Sarawak.

His problem is typical of all political strongman of course. Having
consolidating his position of absolute leadership within the BN and
his own PBB by a long process of divide and rule, he has ensured
nobody is strong enough to challenge him. In the end, nobody is
strong enough to replace him once he is compelled by nature to
retire, in one way or another.

Anything is therefore possible in the post-Taib era.

Should there be a factional fight within the PBB, it will affect the
stability of the entire state BN. There could be a realignment of
political tectonic plates in Sarawak, and the new CM may be weakened.
The obvious way out for some Sarawak Malay leaders may just be that:
get Umno to enter Sarawak. A kind of political crisis could be easily
created to engineer the need for Umno.

There are many reasons why it is advantageous for Umno to gain direct
control of the last "free" state in Malaysia. That would deserve some
attention elsewhere.

There are also obvious obstacles. For one thing, the PBB is composed
of a dominant Malay/Muslim wing, and a Dayak Pesaka wing. The Pesaka
wing is crucial to the dominant position of the PBB within the
Sarawak BN and the state government.

After all, the Malays/Muslims comprise only a quarter of the state's
total population, while the Dayaks make up over 40%. It would be next
to impossible for a Malay/Melanau CM to hold office for long without
this crucial strategic alliance between the Malays/Muslims and the
Dayaks.. With the inclusion of the Dayak wing, the BN was able to
fight off any Dayak nationalist challenge from the opposition, such
as the one mounted by PBDS in the late 80's and early 90's.

If Umno were to enter Sarawak, how they would accommodate the Dayak
chunk of the party will be an ambiguous area, which the Umno has
never been very good at. It would be next to impossible for Umno to
admit Dayaks as full members, for that will dilute the Umno ideology
of purist Malay nationalism.

Unique distinctive traits

For another, the brazen near-racist political style of Umno would be
quite alien to Sarawakians, even to the Malays in Sarawak.

I am not sure if the Malays in my home state are of the same stock as
the Malays elsewhere, but culturally and socially, they have very
unique distinctive traits shaped by a different historical path.
Memories of the Malacca Sultanate and the rise and fall of the
Peninsular Sultans over the past centuries would be quite irrelevant
to the Sarawak Malays. They were ruled by the Sultan of Brunei for
centuries until the arrival of James Brooke (right) in the later half
of the 19th century. The grand Malay nationalist narrative that works
so well in KL may not tally well with those Malays over the other
side of the ocean.

The Malays in Sarawak even speaks a kind of dialect which will be
largely unintelligible to Malays coming from West Malaysia for the
first time! Outside official and business circles, at the levels of
personal and social interaction, the official version of Bahasa
Malaysia so beloved by the people in charge of RTM would sound like a
foreign language! Ironically, integration in Sarawak has been
achieved partly by the mastery of this Sarawak Malay dialect by
people of other ethnic origins!

For example, the Sarawak Malay word for a cockroach is lipih, and it
signifies all that is bad about an insect that steals food in the
night. It is the dishonourable word bestowed by Sarawak Malays on the
West Malaysian Malay soldiers posted to this eastern state to ensure
the territorial integrity of Malaysia. In past decades, there have
been rare but rather violent clashes between some of these soldiers
and the local Malay community over the soldiers' dating habits.

The Malays in Sarawak are certainly very devout Muslims, but for some
strange reasons, they have been spared the radicalisation of
political Islam that began in the Peninsula in the 70s and the 80s.
PAS has tried several times to establish a foothold in Sarawak,
without any apparent success. The sort of religious issues that have
divided the races in West Malaysia is not likely to trouble
Sarawakians much.

This is what sets the Sarawak Malays apart from Malays elsewhere.
They have no problem with making personal friends with members of
other ethnic communities. Interethnic marriages are quite common. No
leader of the PBB will dream of waving the keris during any party
general assembly! I suspect the educated Malay elite in Sarawak feel
as much Malay as they feel they are Sarawakians! I know so.

I am incurably partisan, naturally. The entry of Umno in a big way
into Sarawak will only corrupt the Sarawakian soul, what with their
irrational demand for petty racial loyalty, their massive corruption,
and their belittling of the trans-cultural convivial celebration of
our common humanity.

My prayers will be that Umno will never come to Sarawak, and if they
do, they will be rejected en masse!

Ramadan Is More Than Just Fasting

M. Bakri Musa

In the documentary film American Ramadan, a Christian minister related his
experience in Malaysia. It was during Ramadan, and he was at the airport
at dusk to collect his luggage, but everyone at the counter was intently
watching the clock, eagerly awaiting the breaking of fast. He did not
know then the significance of the month and thus could not comprehend the
workers' apparent obsession with time. An older clerk however came over
to help and spent over an hour with the visitor while the others were
busy eating.
To me, that older clerk best demonstrates the true meaning and spirit of
Ramadan. It is more than just fasting during the day; it is about being
generous. He was generous with his time and himself to help a total
stranger, albeit a customer. The older clerk could just as easily join
his co-workers in eating after a day of fasting, or simply have the
counter "Closed for lunch!"

Ramadan As Allah's Special Blessing

Tradition has it that during Ramadan the doors to Hell are closed while
the gates to Heaven are wide open. That reflects the generosity of Allah
during this holy month. As our Imam Ilyas Anwar said in the first Friday
sermon of this Ramadan, we should use fully this opportunity afforded by
Allah. The best way for us to show our respect for Ramadan, and thus for
Allah, is to reciprocate His generosity by being generous to our fellow
humans and to His other creations.
We should not however, take that tradition literally and consider it a
license to be reckless and get killed during Ramadan just to secure a
slot in Heaven. Nor does it mean that an evil person dying in Ramadan
would be spared Hell. Such decisions after all are the prerogative of
Allah, and only of Him.
Ramadan is a season to be generous, to forgive generously and turn for us
to be so forgiven. It distresses me greatly that no Muslim nation,
Malaysia included, have shown fit to grant their prisoners amnesty during
Ramadan. Imagine the positive image of Islam if Muslim leaders were to be
generous to their citizens, especially those prisoners of conscience
incarcerated without trial.
Just as the day's fast heightens our sensitivity to the flavor of even the
simplest food, likewise Allah heightens or enhances the spirituality and
blessings of our regular ibadat (religious duties) when performed during
Ramadan.
Yes, we pray and give charity outside of Ramadan, nonetheless
during the fasting month the blessings are amplified. While tradition
has it that the virtue of praying on the "Night of Power" equals that of
"a thousand months," or that certain ibadat are worth "44 times more" if
done during Ramadan, we should not be obsessed with the magnitude of the
enhancements. Suffice for us to know that they are, and that should
motivate us even more to perform those ibadats with greater fervor and
frequency during Ramadan.
We should do more of what we normally do, like praying and giving zakat
(tithe), and perform them with even greater intensity during Ramadan.
Thus, in addition to our regular prayers there are the nightly Taraweekh
prayers, reciting the Quran, and fulfilling our tithe for the year as
well as the obligatory zakat Fitr (head tax).
We should also be more charitable to and forgiving of others and
ourselves. Thus the prophet, s.a.w., encourages us to partake in
community iftars (breaking of fast) not only for the communal bonding but
also to share with those less fortunate.
Because of the enhanced blessings of Ramadan, the Prophet, s.a.w., used to
prepare his people for its arrival by fasting on certain days during the
two immediate preceding months. We too should prepare spiritually as
well as physically.
Fasting takes a toll on our body, but Allah in His Generosity
does not require us to fast if it would impose an undue burden as when we
are sick, traveling, or pregnant. Nonetheless those blessed with good
health and where fasting would not pose an undue strain should still have
to be prepared. We must maintain our regular physical exercises and
health routines, with particular emphasis on our oral hygiene.
Additionally, we should be clean, neatly attired, and keep ourselves well
trimmed. If we aspire to be spiritually clean, we must also be physically
so.

Ramadan As "Time Out!"

With the acknowledged extra demands of Ramadan, it may appear perverse to
non-Muslims that we Muslims eagerly await and indeed celebrate its
arrival. At its elemental level Ramadan forces us to change our daily
routine. For Muslims in the tropics where there are no distinct seasons
to modulate their activities, this is useful. In temperate zone, the
long cold winter nights are for rest and the long days of summer for
work. Such natural rhythm is absent in the tropics.
Ramadan also serves as a convenient time frame to anchor memories. Thus
it was during the last Ramadan of the Japanese Occupation, or the first
following the birth or death of a family member.
The altered routine forces one to pause and reflect, a ritualistic "time
out," to step back momentarily off the conveyor belt of life. When I was
a consultant to a lumber mill in Oregon, the manager took me on a tour of
his facility so I could better appreciate the injuries of his workers. I
saw the huge logs being subjected to harsh debarking, repeatedly sawn
through, and then bent and bounced about as they were mechanically sorted
and graded. You could hardly hear one another with the noise and
vibrations.
Then I was taken to another huge warehouse where the atmosphere was
completely the opposite. It was eerily quiet, with stacks of the cut
products neatly piled up and left undisturbed. Even the workers
whispered to each other, as if respecting the quiet time of the lumber.
This was the curing room, with its light, temperature and humidity
controlled and kept constant.
The manager explained that after the logs had been through the stresses of
the mill, the products needed time to recover before they would be
subjected again to the stresses at the construction site or factory. If
they were not allowed to recover or be "cured," they could break easily.
His brand name would then suffer.
If inanimate objects like lumber needs "rest time" to recover from the
hectic experience of the mill, imagine the need for such times for
humans. Ramadan is that necessary "time out," a season to pause and
reflect.

Metabolic Consequences of Fasting

Obesity is the number one public health challenge in America today.
Studies in rats indicate that moderate caloric reduction significantly
lengthens their lifespan. With humans, obesity is a definite contributor
to increased morbidity and shortened lifespan. Imagine if fasting were to
be a habit! I routinely lose about five pounds during Ramadan, and feel
great!
If nothing else fasting is a respite for our digestive system
that is incessantly stressed by our daily indulgences.
These benefits of Ramadan would be negated if we were to be a glutton in
the evening. With the increasingly common practice of indulging
ourselves with elaborate iftars at fancy hotels, many actually gain
weight! Such extravagances are certainly not in the spirit of a season
that calls for restraint and moderation.
At the House of Kedah restaurant in Vancouver, Canada, there is sign at
its buffet table, "There will be $5.00 charge, donated to charity, for
unfinished plate." What a wonderful idea! It prevents waste and
discourages gluttony.
The caloric deprivation and mild dehydration of fasting affect brain
function by heightening the neural connections in the areas concerned
with emotions; hence the enhanced spirituality experienced by many when
meditating during Ramadan. We are thus rewarding ourselves through
fasting.
When we are generous with ourselves, we would also be more likely to be
generous to others. It is in this spirit that I wish my fellow Muslims,
"Selamat Berpuasa!" (Best wishes with your fast!) and Ramadan Mubarak!
(Joyous Ramadan!)

Ahmadinejad and Bush: Mirror men

Ahmadinejad and Bush: Mirror men
By Stephen Zunes

This past Wednesday, I was among a group of American religious
leaders and scholars who met with Iranian President Mahmud
Ahmadinejad in New York. In what was billed as an inter-faith
dialogue, we frankly shared our strong opposition to certain Iranian
government policies and provocative statements made by the Iranian
president. At the same time, we avoided the insulting language
employed by Columbia University president Lee Bollinger before a
public audience two days earlier.

The Iranian president was quite unimpressive. Indeed, with his
ramblings and the superficiality of his analysis, he came across as
more pathetic than evil.

The more respectful posture of our group that morning led to a more
open exchange of views. Before an audience largely composed of
Christian clergy, he reminded us that we worship the same God, have
been inspired by many of the same prophets, and share similar values
of peace, justice and reconciliation. The Iranian president impressed
me as someone sincerely devout in his religious faith, yet rather
superficial in his understanding and inclined to twist his faith
tradition in ways to correspond with his pre-conceived ideological
positions. He was rather evasive when it came to specific questions
and was not terribly coherent, relying more on platitudes than
analysis, and would tend to get his facts wrong. In short, he
reminded me in many respects of President George W Bush.

Both Ahmadinejad and Bush have used their fundamentalist
interpretations of their faith traditions to place the world in a
Manichean perspective of good versus evil. The certitude of their
positions regardless of evidence to the contrary, their sense that
they are part of a divine mission, and their largely successful
manipulation of their devoutly religious constituents have put these
two nations on a dangerous confrontational course.

Ahmadinejad can get away with it because he is president of a
theocratic political system that allows very limited freedoms and
opportunities for public debate. We have no such excuse here in the
United States, however, for the strong bipartisan support for Bush's
righteous anti-Iranian crusade, most recently illustrated by a series
of provocative anti-Iranian measures recently passed by an
overwhelming margin of the Democratic-controlled Congress.

There are many differences between the two men, of course. Perhaps
the most significant is that, unlike Bush, Ahmadinejad has very
little political power, particularly in the areas of military and
foreign policy. So why, given Ahmadinejad's lack of real political
power, was so much made of his annual trip to the opening session of
the UN General Assembly?

Ahmadinejad's political weakness
The president of Iran is constitutionally weak. The real power in
Iran lies in the hands of Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other
conservative Shi'ite clerics on the Council of Guardians. Just as
they were able to stifle the reformist agenda of Ahmadinejad's
immediate predecessor, Mohammed Khatami, they have similarly thwarted
the radical agenda of the current president, whom they view as
something of a loose cannon.

Furthermore, Ahmadinejad's influence is waning. The new head of the
Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ali Jafari, is from a conservative
sub-faction opposed to the more radical elements allied with
Ahmadinejad. He replaced the former guard head, Yahya Rahim-Safavi,
who was apparently seen as too openly sympathetic to the president.
In addition, former president and Ahmadinejad rival, Ayatollah
Hashemi Rafsanjani was recently elected to head the powerful Experts'
Assembly, defeating Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, who was backed by
Ahmadinejad supporters and other hardliners.

Ahmadinejad's election in 2005 was not evidence of a turn to the
right by the Iranian electorate. The clerical leadership's
restrictions on who could run made it nearly impossible for any real
reformist to emerge as a presidential contender. Ahmadinejad's
opponent in the runoff election was the 70-year-old Rafsanjani, who
was seen as a corrupt representative of the political establishment.
The fact that he had become a millionaire while in government
overshadowed his modest reform agenda. By contrast, Ahmadinejad, the
relatively young Tehran mayor, focused on the plight of the poor and
cleaning up corruption.

As a result, Iranian voters were forced to choose between two flawed
candidates. The relatively liberal contender came across as an out-of-
touch elitist, and his ultraconservative opponent was able to
assemble a coalition of rural, less-educated and fundamentalist
voters to conduct a pseudo-populist campaign based on promoting
morality and value-centered leadership. In short, it bore some
resemblance to the presidential election in the United States one
year earlier.

Under Ahmadinejad's leadership, the level of corruption and the
economic situation for most Iranians has actually worsened. As a
result, in addition to losing the backing of the clerical leadership,
he has lost much of his base and his popularity has plummeted. In
municipal elections last December, Ahmadinejad's slates lost heavily
to moderate conservatives and reformers. Why, then, is all this
attention being given to a relatively powerless lame duck president
of a Third World country?

Part of the reason may be that highlighting Ahmadinejad's extremist
views and questioning his mental stability helps convince millions of
Americans that if Iran develops an atomic bomb, it will immediately
use it against the United States or an ally such as Israel. With more
than 200 nuclear weapons and advanced missile capabilities, Israel
has more than enough deterrent capability to prevent an Iranian
attack. Obviously, American deterrent capabilities are even greater.
However, if you depict Iran's leader as crazy, it puts nuclear
deterrence in question and helps create an excuse for the United
States or Israel to launch a preventive war prior to Iran developing
a nuclear weapons capability.

In reality, though, the Iranian president is not commander-in-chief
of the armed forces, so Ahmadinejad would be incapable of ordering
an attack on Israel even if Iran had the means to do so. Though the
clerics certainly take hardline positions on a number of policy
areas, collective leadership normally mitigates impulsive actions
such as launching a war of aggression. Indeed, bold and risky
policies rarely come out of committees.

It should also be noted that while Ahmadinejad is certainly very anti-
Israel, his views are not as extreme as they have been depicted. For
example, Ahmadinejad never actually threatened to "wipe Israel off
the map" nor has he demonstrated a newly hostile Iranian posture
toward the Jewish state. Not only was this oft-quoted statement a
mistranslation - the idiom does not exist in Farsi and the reference
was to the dissolution of the regime, not the physical destruction of
the nation -the Iranian president was quoting from a statement by
ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini from over 20 years earlier. In addition,
he explicitly told our group on September 26 that there was "no
military solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict" and that it
was "not Iran's intention to destroy Israel".

The Saddam niche
The emphasis and even exaggeration of Ahmadinejad's more bizarre and
provocative statements makes it easier to ignore his more sensible
observations, such as: "Arrogant power seekers and militarists betray
God's will." It also makes it politically easier for the United
States to refuse to engage in dialogue or enter into negotiations,
such as those that led to an end of Libya's nuclear program in 2003.
Ahmadinejad has welcomed American religious delegations to Iran, but
the United States has denied visas to Iranian religious delegations
to this country. The Bush administration has also blocked cultural
and scholarly exchanges.
The disproportionate media coverage of Ahmadinejad's UN visit also
suggests that Ahmadinejad fills a certain niche in the American
psyche formerly filled by the likes of Saddam Hussein and Libya's
Muammar Gaddafi as the Middle Eastern leader we most love to hate. It
gives us a sense of righteous superiority to compare ourselves to
these seemingly irrational and fanatical foreign despots. If these
despots can be inflated into far greater threats than they actually
are, these threats can justify the enormous financial and human costs
of maintaining American armed forces in that volatile region to
protect ourselves and our allies and even to make war against far-off
nations in "self-defense".

Such inflated threats also have the added bonus of silencing critics
of America's overly-militarized Middle East policy, since anyone who
dares to challenge the hyperbole and exaggerated claims regarding
these leaders' misdeeds or to provide a more balanced and realistic
assessment of the actual threat they represent can then be depicted
as naive apologists for dangerous fanatics who threaten our national
security.

Furthermore, focusing on Ahmadinejad's transparent double-standards
and hypocrisy makes it easier to ignore similar tendencies by the US
president. Ahmadinejad's speech at the UN on September 25 was widely
criticized for its emphasis on human rights abuses by Israel and the
United States while avoiding mention of his own country's poor human
rights record. It helps distract attention from Bush's speech that
same day, in which he criticized human rights abuses by dictatorial
governments in Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Myanmar and Cuba,
but avoided mentioning human rights abuses by Egypt, Saudi Arabia,
Equatorial Guinea, Oman, Pakistan, Cameroon and Chad, or any other
dictatorship allied with the United States.

The outreach by Christian clergy to Ahmadinejad, whom The New York
Times described as "the religious president of a religious nation who
relishes speaking on a religious plane", came out of a belief in the
importance of dialogue and reconciliation. Our group emphasized that
we were critical of the US government's threats but also raised
concerns on such issues as Iranian human rights abuses and
Ahmadinejad's hostility toward Israel and denial of the Holocaust.
Virtually all our questions, however, were thrown back in criticisms
toward the United States. "Who are the ones that are filling their
arsenals with nuclear weapons?" he said. "The United States has
developed a fifth generation of atomic bombs and missiles that could
hit Iran. Who is the real danger here?"

Indeed, it must seem odd to most people in the Middle East that the
United States, which is 10,000 miles away from the longest-range
weapon the Iranians can currently muster and possesses by far the
most powerful militarily apparatus the world has ever seen, is
depicting Iran as the biggest threat to its national security. As
Ahmadinejad put it to our group that morning, "The United States has
many thousands of troops on our borders and threatens to attack us.
Why is it, then, that Iran is seen as a threat?" And though most
Iranians, Arabs, and other Muslims recognize Ahmadinejad as an
extremist, he is unfortunately correct in accusing the United States
of unfairly singling out Iran, an issue that has real resonance in
that part of the world.

Indeed, the United States is obsessed with Iran's nuclear program -
still many years away from producing an atomic bomb - while we
support the neighboring states of Pakistan, India and Israel, which
have already developed nuclear weapons and which are also in
violation of UN Security Council resolutions regarding their nuclear
programs.

We blame Iran for the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq, yet 95% of
US casualties are from anti-Iranian Sunni insurgents. We focus on
Iranian human rights abuses while we continue to support the even
more oppressive and theocratic Islamic regime in Saudi Arabia. We
attack the Iranian president's denial of the genocide of European
Jews while remaining silent in the face of Turkish leaders' denial of
the genocide of Armenians. One of the most important principles of
most faith traditions is moral consistency. Few receive greater wrath
in most holy texts than hypocrites.

Americans have many legitimate concerns regarding Iranian policies in
general and the statements of Ahmadinejad in particular. However, as
long as US policy appears to be based on such opportunistic double
standards rather than consistent principles, Ahmadinejad's
inflammatory rhetoric will continue to find an audience.

'If I don't accept, I'll be sacked'

'If I don't accept, I'll be sacked'
Beh Lih Yi
Oct 1, 07 11:39am

Why did former lord president Hamid Omar refuse to withdraw from
chairing a tribunal that led to the removal of his boss, Salleh Abas,
during the 1988 judicial crisis?

The answer was revealed by Param Cumaraswamy - the immediate past
president of the Bar Council during the 1988 crisis - at a forum in
Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
In 1988, Salleh, the former lord president, was found guilty of
judicial misconduct by a special tribunal chaired by Hamid. At that
time, Hamid was acting lord president and next in line to succeed
Salleh.

Strong objections, especially from the Bar Council, were raised then
over Hamid's role in the tribunal.

At Saturday's forum, attended by some 250 people, Param disclosed
what had transpired at a meeting between a Bar Council delegation led
by him and Hamid.

"We went to see Hamid to advise him not to accept the position for
the obvious reason that he was next in line. I advised Hamid 'please
don't (accept), you will cause a very ugly embarrassment to the
judiciary," he said.

"His (Hamid's) response was 'Param, if I don't accept, I will be
sacked. If I am sacked, will you or your Bar Council compensate my
losses of remuneration?'" he added.

He further quoted Hamid as telling him, "Param, if you want, you can
go and advise the King."

Param, who is also the former UN special rapporteur on the
independence of judges and lawyers, said he retorted by telling Hamid
that the latter was in a better position to advise the King.

According to him, this conversation with Hamid was never made public
or documented until now.

Judges axed

He also explained that the Bar Council president at the time, Raja
Aziz Addruse, could not be part of the delegation in the meeting with
Hamid since the latter was representing Salleh.

Param was one of the four speakers at the forum titled 'From Nurin to
chief justice: A collapse of law and order?'. It was organised by the
Institute for Policy Research.

The sacking of Salleh in 1988 has been described as the
darkest moment in Malaysia's judicial history.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had then set up the special
tribunal which tried Salleh on charges of misconduct and for
questioning the constitutional amendments that seriously eroded the
powers of the judiciary.

Two of five supreme court judges - George Seah and Wan Sulaiman Pawan
Teh - who had ruled that the tribunal was convened unconstitutionally
were also sacked.

The supreme court, which has been renamed as the Federal Court, was
then the highest court in the country.

After an 18-year silence, Salleh broke his silence in August last
year and came out strongly to support the Bar Council's call for a
review of the 1988 judicial crisis.

However, the government has rejected this.

FKontroversi Sharifah Hapsah, Saran Kaur dan gaji Prof RM8 juta!

Oct 01, 07 | 1:15:00 pm MYT

BANGI, 1 Okt (Hrkh) - Majoriti kakitangan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin.

Bagaimanapun, Naib Canselor mengetepikan semua prosedur berkenaan.

melaksanakan tugas TNC."

Difahamkan Sharifah Hapsah melantik Saran Kaur, walaupun tanpa mengikut
prosedur lazim, kerana mereka merupakan kawan rapat sejak lama, selain
faktor gender.

pensyarah kejuruteraan, Prof Dr Che Husna Azhari.

kelam-kabut apabila ia disedang dibuat proses ubah-suai sehingga beberapa
bahagian terpaksa dipindahkan ke Kolej Kediaman Keris Mas.

Menurut pemerhati, kalaupun KPT mahu melantik kalangan bukan Bumiputera

"Apakah Naib Canselor UKM membuat keputusan hanya berdasarkan perasaan,

Dr Tan!

Transcript of a muslim female psychologist interview on Islam

http://switch3. castup.net/ cunet/gm. asp?ai=214& ar=1050wmv& ak=nul

A Muslim female psychologist, Wafa Sultan from Los Angeles interviewed in
Al Jazeera TV on 21 February 2006.

¡°The crash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of
religions, or a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between two
opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that
belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belong to the 21st
century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness; between
the civilized and the primitive; between barbarity and rationality. It
is a crash between freedom and oppression; between democracy and
dictatorship. It is a clash between human right on the one hand, and
the violation of those rights, on the other hand. It is a clash between
those who treated women like beasts, and those who treat them like human
beings.¡±

¡°What we see today is not a clash between civilizations. Civilisations
do not clash but compete.¡±

A commentator asked, ¡°I understand from your words that what is
happening today is a clash between the culture of the West, and the
backwardness and ignorance of the Muslims.¡±

She replied. ¡°Yes, that is what I mean¡±.

Commentator: ¡°Who come up with the concept of a clash of civilizations?
Was it not Samuel Huntington? It was not Bin Laden. I would like to
discuss this issue, if you do not mind¡-.¡±

She replied, ¡°The Muslims are the ones that began using this
expression. The Muslims are the ones that began the clash of
civilizations. The Prophet of Islam said, ¡°I was ordered to fight the
people until they believe in Allah and his Messenger.¡± When the Muslims
divided the people into Muslims and Non-Muslims, and called to fight the
others until they believe in what they themselves believe. They started
this clash and began this war. In order to stop this war, they must
re-examine their Islamic books and curricula, which are full of calls for
takfir and fighting the infidels. My colleague had said that he never
offends of other people¡¯s beliefs, what civilization on the face of
this earth allows him to call others by names they did not choose for
themselves. Once he calls them Ahl Al-Dhimma. Another time he calls
them ¡°the people of the Book¡±. And yet another time he compares them
to apes and pigs. Or he calls the Christians ¡°those who incur
Allah¡¯s wrath. Who told you they are ¡°people of the Book¡±? They are
not ¡°people of the Book¡±, they are people of many books. All the useful
scientific books today are theirs, the fruits of their free and creative
thinking. What gives you the right to call them ¡°those who incur
Allah/s Wrath,¡± or ¡°those who have gone astray,¡± and then come here to
say that your religion commands you to refrain from offending the beliefs
of others?

I am not a Christian, a Muslim or a Jew. I am a secular human being.
I do not believe in the supernatural, but I respect others¡± right to
believe in it.

Another commentator asked, ¡°Are you a heretic?¡±

She replied, ¡°You can say whatever you like. I am a secular human
being that does not believe in the supernatural.¡±

The commentator said: If you are a heretic, there is no point in
rebuking you, since you have blasphemed against Islam, the Prophet, and
the Koran¡-

She interjected: ¡°These are personal matters that do not concern you.
Brother, you can believe in stone, as long as you do not throw them at
me. You are free to worship whomever you want, but others¡¯ belief is
not your concern, whether they believe the Messiah is God, son of Mary,
or that Satan is the son of God or Mary. Let people have their beliefs.
The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and force the
world to respect them, with their work, not their crying and yelling,
Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th
centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 millions people, scattered throughout
the world, united and won the right through work and knowledge. You have
not seen a Jew blow himself in a German restaurant. We have seen a
single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew who protests
by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into
rubble. We have not seen a Buddhist burn down a
Mosque, kill a Muslim or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend
their belief by burning down churches, killing people and destroy
embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask
themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that the
humankind to respect them.¡±

Malaysia’s Muslim Union?

Malaysia Does Not Need Another Sectarian Organisation!
Farish A. Noor

Sectarianism, be it on the grounds of race, culture, language or
religion, can only be divisive in the long run. The sad litany of
human history shows that religion can and has been used as a dividing
factor that has torn many a society apart, and this is true of all
religions and belief systems worldwide. One only needs to look at the
process of Balkanisation that took place in Eastern Europe to see how
Religion has been instrumentalised and manipulated by sectarian
politicians to amplify the centrifugal forces of a plural society
like Bosnia's, and how that eventually led to all-out civil conflict
along religion and cultural lines.

Politicians of course are fully aware of the divisive potential of
sectarian politics, so why do they constantly fall back on such
parochial and primordial sentiments such as racial, cultural and
religious loyalty to serve their own limited ends? Weighing the costs
of such moves may point us to the simple conclusion that sectarian
politicians seldom care about the unity and well-being of the nation
as a whole, particularly when that nation happens to be a complex and
plural one in the first place. More often than not, the demagogues
and chauvinists among us would be more inclined to keep to their own
narrow corners and seek solace and support from their own respective
communities.

These observations should hardly come as news to Malaysia-watchers in
particular, for we all know by now that Malaysia's convoluted 50-year
history has been one dominated and almost entirely determined by the
logic of racial compartmentalism and communitarianism. Every single
leader who has climbed up the greasy pole of power in the country has
done so by playing the race - and now increasingly, religion - card
close to his chest. It should therefore come as even less of a
surprise that there is now talk of forming a Malaysian Muslim
Workers' Union (PPIM) in the country, as if Malaysian society was not
divided enough already.

Over the past two years the country has witnessed the emergence of
around a dozen now religion-based NGOs and civil society
organisations, most of them appealing to Malaysian Muslims in
particular. While there used to be universalist, inclusive
organisations that brought together Malaysians of various racial and
professional background like factory workers, labourers, lawyers,
businesspeople, professionals etc. we now see the emergence of
organisations that cater to the interests of Muslims primarily and
exclusively. The PPIM is just the latest nail in the coffin of
Malaysia's failed attempts towards pluralism and multiculturalism,
and should it come to pass then it would mean that yet another
neutral public space in the public domain has been lost. Why was
there ever a need for the PPIM in the first place, when surely the
Malaysian Trade Unions organisation (MTUC) was there to unite all the
workers of Malaysia under a common universal basis of shared
collective class interests?

Two factors need to be taken into consideration here:

The first is the fact that since the late 1960s Malaysian society has
witnessed the instrumentalisation of religion - and in particular
Islam - by right-wing communitarian politicians and activists who
sought to mobilise Muslims as a bloc vote and political constituency.
It began with sectarian organisations like ABIM and other Muslim
students groups on campus that sought to introduce their brand of
'Islamisation from below', and whatever radical impact they could
have had - by rejecting Western economic-political-military hegemony
across the world, for instance - was compromised by their own limited
sectarian and exclusive worldview that was equally hegemonic in its
ambitions. In time the potential of such groups was compromised as
their leaders and members were co-opted by the ruling elite; the co-
optation of ABIM's leader Anwar Ibrahim by the then Prime Minister
Mahathir Mohamad being a case in point.

Secondly it should be stated frankly that all this talk of
'protecting' the seemingly unique interests of the Malay-Muslims in
Malaysia is little more than fluff and nonsense, for the real agenda
all along has been the furthering of the right-wing agenda of Malay-
Muslim supremacy above all else. Malaysia's Islamisation process
pushed by Mahathir and Anwar in the 1980s and 1990s led to the
further entrenchment of Malay-Muslim political and class interests;
and benefited the ruling BN-led government and its clients most of
all, further adding to the dominance of Malay-Muslims in the civil
service, army and police; and further embedded Islam at the centre of
Malaysian politics. It was not the universal values of Islam that
were served here, but rather the agenda of Malay-Muslim supremacy
otherwise known as 'Ketuanan Melayu'.

The net result of the current moves to create a parallel Muslim
workers movement in Malaysia can therefore only split Malaysian
society even further along religious communitarian lines and
therefore help to ensure the dominance of the communitarian parties
and elites currently running the country. How are the workers of
Malaysia - who ought to be united along the basis of class solidarity
and common class action - to be served by the creation of such a body
that will split their numbers by half at least? Are we to believe
that the poverty and exploitation of Muslim workers in Malaysia is
qualitatively different to that of his or her non-Muslim comrade? The
mind boggles... What will be next? A Malaysian Muslim stamp
collectors' organisation?

Consequently the Muslim workers of Malaysia must realise that these
attempts to create parallel movements that cater to their own limited
exclusive interests will do a disservice to them in the long run. For
their own sake, and for the sake of the workers struggle in Malaysia,
they need to remember that their loyalty and camaraderie has to lie
with their fellow workers and comrades in the workers movement of
Malaysia as a whole, regardless of racial, cultural or religious
differences.

Blow away the whistle-blower

Blow away the whistle-blower
Raja Petra Kamarudin

Let me make this short and sharp. Malaysia Today has published many
reports about the links between the organised crime syndicate and the
Royal Malaysian Police.

Thus far, six police officers and two underworld operators have come
forward to sign Affidavits testifying that undoubtedly there are
links between the underworld and the police. Malaysia Today did not
publish the two Affidavits signed by the underworld figures (yes,
that is my insurance policy in the safe-keeping of someone very
important) but the six signed by the police officers were previously
published as follows:

1. ASP Hong Kin Hock (G/10990)
2. ASP Mior Fahim Bin Ahmad (K/P Polis No: G/13237)
3. ASP Md. Yusof Bin Ahmad (K/P Polis No: G/10608)
4. Pemangku Sarjan Mejar Manimaran a/l Palaniappan (K/P Polis No: D/
94894)
5. Detektif Sarjan Raja Kumar (K/P Polis No: D/104700)
6. Sarjan Mohd. Yasin Bin Malik (K/P Polis No: RF/89379)

Today, what we want to reveal is the story of how one police
officer's family was 'kidnapped' by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA)
and held for 'ransom' to solicit his cooperation. He and his wife
have since made police reports on the matter. Isn't it ironical that
even police officers face kidnap threats and they have had to resort
to making police reports to seek justice? What danger do you think
people like you and I face when we do not wear a police uniform and
carry a gun? In fact, when a police officer shot two people in Kuala
Terengganu recently, they launched a day and night, house-to-house,
state-wide manhunt to look for 37 of the 41 demonstrators who did not
'surrender' when the deadline to do so ended. It is not the police
officer who shot two people whom they were concerned with. Instead,
it was those who the police tried to shoot who are the brunt of the
police action.

And now they talk about bringing the parents of a raped, tortured and
murdered child to face the music for the tragedy that befell them.
And we also hear sermons from people of the cloth who blame scantily-
dressed girls for getting raped by sex perverts who can't keep their
hormones in check. Will we next see bank directors getting charged in
court when bank robbers rob their banks and goldsmith owners being
dragged off to jail in chains when their goldsmith shops get robbed?
Yes, and millionaires should be shot when their children get
kidnapped because they did not hire bodyguards to look after their
children and luxury car owners should be jailed for parking their
cars on the street when they went into the restaurant to have dinner
instead of employing a driver to sit in the car to guard it against
car thieves.

Anyway, let us get back to the police officer whose family was
kidnapped by the ACA. Awhile back, Malaysia Today reported that some
underworld bosses who were detained under the Emergency Ordinance
were released by instructions from some higher-ups in the police
force. This was in fact not the only time this happened. There were
other such incidence where the Deputy Minister of Internal Security
was implicated and where it is said he received RM5.5 million in
bribes to release them. The allegation was revealed in an anonymous
website which the Deputy Minister concerned suspects someone in the
police force itself set up. Nevertheless, the revelation was
announced by the police as only they appeared to be aware of the
existence of this website and the Deputy Minister was called for
interrogation before the ACA. The ACA subsequently announced that the
Deputy Minister is innocent of the allegation and they classified the
case closed and no further action (NFA) required.

In the second incident it was the Inspector-General of Police (IGP)
who was this time accused of perpetuating the exact same thing that
the Deputy Minister of Internal Security was accused of. But this
time the amount was slightly less than half which the Deputy Minister
was accused of. The IGP too was cleared by the ACA. It seems they
checked his bank account and could not find RM2 million in it so this
means he must be innocent and could not have taken any bribes from
the underworld.

So it looks like both the Deputy Minister and the IGP are innocent
and the allegations against them are all false. Sure, many underworld
bosses who were detained under the Emergency Ordinance were released.
But they were released because they were wrongly-detained and their
detention did not follow proper procedures and not because the Deputy
Minister and the IGP were paid money to release them. And since the
ACA launched thorough investigations into the allegations against the
Deputy Minister and the IGP and found them innocent then we must take
the word of the ACA and assume that they are therefore innocent as
what the ACA says. After all, if the ACA could not find the RM7
million or RM8 million in their bank accounts then there is no way
they could have taken bribes from the underworld bosses. If they did
then the money would still be in their bank accounts.

The government -- meaning here of course the Royal Malaysian Police,
the Anti-Corruption Agency, and the Attorney-General's Chambers --
have said that they have investigated the allegations against the
Deputy Minister and the IGP and have found them to be unfounded. It
is just two groups that are trying to bring each other down, say
those who walk in the corridors of power. The police force is badly
split and this is just the result of two groups, Team A and Team B,
fighting for control of the police force, explains others in the
corridors of power. This is just a turf war between two organised
crime syndicates that are trying to gain control of the drugs,
prostitution, illegal gambling and loan-sharking rackets, argue yet
others who walk in the corridors of power. More theories are thrown
onto the table: actually, both Team A and Team B are equally guilty
of links with the underworld and each is trying to topple the other
so that they can gain control of the drugs, prostitution, illegal
gambling and loan-sharking rackets.

Well, whatever it may be, those who walk in the corridors of power
should know better. But whatever the reason may be, they are all
equally perturbing. This means there are serious problems in the
police force. Whether it is one group jealous of another, whether it
is a conspiracy to bring down the IGP, whether it is because the
police are split into Team A and Team B, whether it is a turf war in
the underworld and the police are just taking sides, they are all
destructive and merely serves to demonstrate that we have serious
problems on Peace Hill. And what irony that Peace Hill is not so
peaceful nowadays.

Anyway, the government needs the truth to emerge and the only way for
it to emerge would be for those who know the truth to come forward.
90% of the success in solving cases by the Income Tax Department, the
Anti-Corruption Agency, the Royal Malaysian Police, etc., is the
result of information they receive from whistle-blowers. In fact, the
government depends so much on whistle-blowers that it has launched a
whistle-blower protection program. Protection of whistle-blowers is
internationally accepted and there is even an international agreement
to that effect. Whistle-blowers must not only be protected but they
have to also be placed under the witness protection programme and
relocated with a new identity if need be. That would be the only way
to ensure that the crime rate is kept low and the success rate of
solving crimes is kept high.

But this does not happen in Malaysia. In Malaysia, if you were to
squeal on those from amongst you who are corrupt, you will suffer
retribution. Now do you know why it is so hard to pin down those
police officers who murdered Altantuyu? Many know what happened but
not many dare come forward to reveal what happened. To do so would be
detrimental to one's health.

Take the case of Nordin bin Ahmad, a police officer. He investigated
the underworld bosses and helped build up the case against them. He
squealed on the dirty cops. And he was made to regret that. They used
the ACA to kidnap his wife and children on 23 September 2007 with a
warning that they will be released only if he presents himself at the
ACA office and changes his testimony implicating the underworld
bosses. Both Nordin Ahmad and his wife, Kalsom Mat Nor, have made
police reports on the matter which you can view below.

Yes, this is the same ACA that investigated the allegations against
the Deputy Minister of Internal Security and the IGP and subsequently
cleared them. If the ACA can resort to kidnapping the family of
police officers and witnesses who testify against crooks, it makes
one wonder whether you can any longer take the word of the ACA. It
appears like they are accessories to crime rather than the
eliminators of it. It appears like the ACA helps cover up the crime
instead of going after the criminal. I know they say it takes a thief
to catch a thief. But in this case the thief is protecting the thief
and kidnapping the family of those who report the thief.

Many other witnesses and whistle-blowers were also summoned before
those who walk in the corridors of power, in particular those who
have signed Affidavits testifying to the fact they have received
instructions from the underworld or received instructions from their
superiors in the police force to cooperate with the underworld bosses
and follow whatever orders they receive from them. Whistle-blowers
have been exposed and now fear for their lives. Whistle-blowers will
now get blown away. And the purpose of this exercise is to 'prove'
that the allegations against Goh Cheng Poh a.k.a Tengku and his
minions are false. On 1 October 2007, the court is scheduled to hear
the application from Tengku for his detention and restricted
residence order to be declared mala fide. If the court buys what he
says, then this notorious underworld boss will be out on the streets
in time to send Hari Raya Ang Pows to the dozens of police officers
he has in his pocket.

Anyway, I am sure they will adduce all sorts of 'evidence' in court
to 'prove' that Tengku is law-abiding, is a member of the Rotary Club
and PTA, goes to the temple every week to pray, does uncountable
charity work and dishes out donations to needy people by the
millions, and all such bullshit. And I am going to start taking bets
that Tengku will soon be back on the streets and all those police
officers who arrested him and those witnesses who testified against
him will wish they had never been born.

Any takers anyone? Let's make it cheap: teh tarik at a favourite
watering-hole of the winner's choice.

CJ's name mentioned in Lingam tape
Sep 29, 07 11:36pm

The name of Chief Justice Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim was
explicitly mentioned in the second part of the infamous 'judicial
appointment fixing' video clip that has yet to be released, Anwar
Ibrahim revealed today.

Although the PKR supremo did not explain in what context Ahmad
Fairuz's name was brought up in the second part, he however appeared
to suggest the revelation will confirm that the person on the other
end of the phone conversation was the CJ.

"In the second part of the clip, there were other personalities
shown. In the second part of the clip too, Ahmad Fairuz was mentioned
by VK Lingam (the lawyer talking in the clip)," Anwar told a 250-odd
crowd at a forum in a Kuala Lumpur hotel this afternoon.

"It is interesting now that the chief justice has denied (his
involvement). I would love to see him defend himself in the dock as
to whether he was lying," he added at the forum titled 'From Nurin to
chief justice: A collapse of law and order?'.

Anwar also noted that it was not accurate to describe the eight-
minute clip he released earlier - out of a 14-minute one - as an
edited version, arguing that the clip was merely separated into two
portions to protect the identity of the source.

Asked later, he said the remaining part of the video clip will be
released at "a right time".

'Judges that money can buy'

The clip Anwar released on Sept 19 showed Lingam talking on the
phone, apparently brokering the appointment of judges with Ahmad
Fairuz, who was the chief judge of Malaya at the time the clip was
said to be recorded in 2002.

Ahmad Fairuz's name was mentioned four times by Lingam throughout the
first part of the clip but it could not be ascertained whether it was
him that the senior lawyer was talking to - although the context of
the conversation indicates that the other person at the other end was
the chief justice.

The video clip has sparked an uproar among the legal fraternity, with
the Bar Council - the governing body for 13,500 lawyers - pressing
for the formation of a royal commission of inquiry to get to the
bottom of the matter.

Falling short of the council's demand, the government earlier this
week established a three-member panel comprising of two former judges
and a social activist to investigate the authenticity of the video clip.

Anwar however gave the thumbs-down on the government's move.

"Are we going to leave it to the executive to decide on the future of
the judiciary? That is very naive," he said of the government-
appointed panel.

The ex-deputy premier added that the whistleblower is "prepared" to
come forward, provided there is sufficient immunity and protection
extended to the latter such as in the form of a probe by a royal
commission of inquiry.

"Let them question the authenticity of the video clip, but we will
win this time," he said to a round of applause from the floor.

Speaking at the same forum, former Transparency International-
Malaysia president Tunku Abdul Aziz (right) supported the calls for
the setting up of a royal commission to look into the "health" of the
judiciary.

"We are in danger of having judicial officers that money can buy," he
said.

"There is an urgent need to reform and overhaul the judicial system
to save it from further destructive manipulation by the executive,"
he declared, adding that it was sad that the judiciary has allowed
itself to be politically influenced.

Bar's EGM may not be postponed

Another speaker, Bar Council secretary Lim Chee Wee (right) said the
council would not let up in pushing for a royal commission of inquiry
just because of the formation of a government-appointed panel, whose
only task is to ascertain the clip's authenticity.

He was quizzed earlier by the floor over the council's latest move to
postpone its extraordinary general meeting (EGM) slated for next
Saturday to discuss the rot in the judiciary.

"We may reconsider it (the decision to postpone the EGM) given the
limited terms of reference of the panel, let's wait and see. The EGM
definitely is not cancelled but merely postponed," he said.

Param Cumaraswamy, the former UN special rapporteur on the
independence of judges and lawyers, reiterated the long-standing call
for a judicial commission to deal with the appointment and elevation
of judges.

"What I can't understand is why the present government of (Prime
Minister) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi continue to resist (a judicial
commission to be set up)?" he asked.

Among those who spoke during the question-and-answer session later
included politician-lawyer Wee Choo Keong - whose name was brought up
by Lingam in the clip - and constitutional lawyer Dominic
Puthucheary, who said he was "shocked" when he first watched the clip.

memorandum mereka berhubung kebebasan kehakiman.

video kontroversial membabitkan peguam VK Lingam. Dalam isu video itu
Majlis Peguam menuntut agar satu Suruhanjaya Di Raja segera dibentuk

March for Justice ini berlangsung. Saya kesal kerana pihak polis bukan

Lalu apakah rasionalnya pihak polis menurunkan FRU?
State atau Negara Polis!

masyarakat). Memadailah jika ada polis trafik mahu mengawal lalulintas
dan dua-tiga pegawai. Kenapa sampai perlu dibawa turun water canon dan
kelengkapan anti rusuhan yang lain?

Saya difahamkan diperingkat awal malah OCPD enggan membenarkan perarakkan
ini diteruskan, kononnya atas alasan keselamatan. Walaubagaimanapun
akhirnya setelah berlaku perundingan, ianya dibenarkan. Malaysia perlu

serambi Makkah walaupun sekarang dunia dilanda globalisasi.

kerajaan Pas (sekiranya menang) selepas pilihan raya kelak. Fatah akan
dilantik sebagai salah seorang Exco Kerajaan Kelantan.

Manakala Saifuddin Nasution pula akan bertanding di Parlimen Machang.
Masih belum tentu apakah bekas Adun Lunas, Kedah itu bertanding
menggunakan lambang PKR ataupun bulan. Seandainya Machang dijadikan

Pas. Langkah Saifuddin tersasau sedikit apabila beliau begitu taksub
dengan kehebatan syarahan bekas Naib Presiden Pas Nakhaei Ahmad
sehinggakan bila Nakhaei menukar kiblat Saifuddin turut sama tergeser
arah!

kalanya berminggu-minggu meninggalkan kawasan.
[wm.kl 10:55
